The fashion world always has a darling. In recent years editors and influencers have fallen wildly in love with Alessandro Michele of Gucci (theatrical! Irreverent!) and Virgil Abloh of Off White (modern! Self-referential!). Now, though, attention has moved decisively towards the new man of the hour: Daniel Lee, the Bradford-born Bottega Veneta designer.

When he was appointed as creative director of the hyper-luxury brand in June 2018, replacing Tomas Maier after 17 years, few fashion editors knew his name. He had no social-media presence — an enigma in an industry full of peacocks — and at 32 had been steadily working behind the scenes.
