AMHERST — An Amherst Regional High School graduate who has been an assistant basketball coach at both Amherst College and Merrimack College is the new athletic director for Amherst public schools.
Victoria Stewart was named to the position Thursday, succeeding Rich Ferro, who had been athletic director since 2012. Ferro stepped down earlier in the summer to return to his previous job as a science teacher at Amherst Regional Middle School.
Stewart, a star basketball player on Amherst Regional’s team and then captain of the University of Massachusetts Amherst basketball squad, holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and education from UMass, and is pursuing a master’s degree in education at Merrimack.
In a statement, Stewart said she brings a strong commitment to student athletes.
“My goals while coaching and teaching are surrounded by the ideas of creating a safe, fun and inclusive learning space for student-athletes, where they are not only able to compete athletically, but are also able to build character and gain the necessary tools in order to help them succeed throughout their lives,” Stewart said.
Before becoming assistant women’s basketball coach at Merrimack, Stewart, a 2012 Amherst Regional graduate, served in the same role at Amherst College during two national championship seasons.
